My guess is that you’ve heard the news. WooCommerce will be pushing their offical Extensions Marketplace quite aggressively throughout everyone’s WooCommerce admin area. It’s a new feature they call Marketplace Suggestions.
The Extension Suggestions appear in our product list and under the product data tab on each product.
If you are like me and like to keep everything as ad free as possible then luckily they’ve provided a filter to disable and remove the Marketplace suggestions. You can read more about it here.
Disable through Code
At this time there isn’t any way to disable the ‘ad’ suggestions through the settings. You’ll need to manually add this function to your site. This can be done through a custom plugin or in your child theme’s functions.php file.
add_filter( ‘woocommerce_allow_marketplace_suggestions’, ‘__return_false’ );
Disable Extension suggestions with a plugin
I’ve created the Clean WooCommerce Plugin, which is a small plugin that removes the Suggested Extensions for you, as well as disables the “Connect to WooCommerce.com” admin nag.
All you need to do is install it and active! Bang! and the dirt is gone!
Why are developers against this?
I believe WooCommerce is doing this to push the sales of their own plugins now that they’ve got more developers selling on their Extensions Marketplace. Displaying plugin ads will be mostly annoying for existing store owners, though I guess it could be somewhat useful for newcomers.
This move by WooCommerce will make it even harder for third-party developers to get found now that offical plugins will be right infront of the store owners. Some people may never look outside the offical marketplace.
