Frequently Asked Questions

You’re wondering if this plugin can handle your specific needs

Running an online food business means dealing with complex nutrition labeling requirements. You need flexibility for different product types, compliance with regional regulations, and the ability to present information clearly to your customers. Let’s address your most common concerns.

Display and Formatting Questions

Why do my calorie values look different in the FDA format?

The FDA has specific rounding rules that we follow precisely.

When you select the FDA format, the plugin applies mandatory FDA rounding requirements. For example:

  • 38.24 calories becomes 40 calories (rounded to nearest 10)
  • 2.3g of fat becomes 2.5g (rounded to nearest 0.5g under 5g)
  • 156mg sodium becomes 160mg (rounded to nearest 10mg over 140mg)

This isn’t a calculation error – it’s ensuring your labels comply with FDA regulations. The Default format uses standard mathematical rounding if you need exact values.

Which table format should I use for Australia/New Zealand?

Use the Default format – it’s designed for international flexibility.

The Default format displays both “Per 100g/ml” (mandatory in AU/NZ) and “Per Serving” columns, meeting FSANZ requirements. Make sure to:

  1. Set your Input Method to “Per 100g” (typically how AU/NZ data is provided)
  2. Define your serving size accurately
  3. Enter energy in kJ (the plugin displays both kJ and kcal)

Always verify compliance with the official FSANZ Food Standards Code.

Which format works for European Union requirements?

The Default format meets EU requirements when configured correctly.

EU regulations require:

  • Nutrition values per 100g/ml (mandatory)
  • Energy in both kJ and kcal (handled automatically)
  • Specific nutrients in prescribed order

Configure as follows:

  1. Use Default table format
  2. Set Input Method to “Per 100g”
  3. Ensure all mandatory EU nutrients are filled

Consult the EU Food Information Regulation (FIC) No 1169/2011 for complete requirements.

Data Entry Questions

How does the Metric vs Imperial setting work?

It converts display units while preserving data accuracy.

When set to Imperial:

  • Grams (g) display as ounces (oz)
  • Milliliters (ml) display as fluid ounces (fl oz)
  • Nutrients in mg, mcg, or kJ/kcal remain unchanged

Your stored data stays in metric units – only the display changes. This means switching between systems won’t affect your data integrity.

What happens if I don’t enter a serving size?

Several features will break or display incorrectly.

Without a serving size:

  • FDA format won’t display at all (it’s required)
  • “Per Serving” calculations can’t be performed
  • Default format may hide the Per Serving column
  • % Daily Values can’t be calculated

Always enter a serving size, even if you’re only displaying per 100g values. It future-proofs your data.

How do I handle non-standard serving units like “1 slice”?

Use “Per Serving” as your input method.

For products measured in pieces, slices, or other non-weight units:

  1. Set Input Method to “Per Serving”
  2. Set Serving Size to “1” and unit to “piece” or “slice”
  3. Enter nutrition values for that single piece/slice

The plugin will display “Serving Size: 1 piece” with the correct values. Using “Per 100g” input method won’t work here since the plugin can’t convert pieces to grams.

Product-Specific Questions

How do I add nutrition info to product variations?

Each variation can have its own nutrition data.

Perfect for products where different flavors or sizes have different nutritional profiles:

  1. Set up default nutrition on the main product (applies to all variations without overrides)
  2. Go to the Variations tab
  3. For each variation that differs:
  • Check “Override product nutrition information for this variation?”
  • Enter specific nutrition data
  1. Save your changes

Customers will see the appropriate nutrition data based on their selected variation.

Can I show nutrition for bundle products?

Yes, with flexible display options.

The plugin intelligently handles WooCommerce Product Bundles:

  • Display nutrition for the bundle as a whole
  • Show individual nutrition for each bundled item
  • Both bundle and item nutrition can be displayed together

This is perfect for meal kits, variety packs, or combo deals where customers need both total and individual nutrition information.

Does the plugin support all required nutrients for my region?

The plugin includes commonly required nutrients globally.

Currently supported:

  • All FDA-mandated nutrients
  • Common EU requirements
  • Standard AU/NZ nutrients
  • Energy (kJ/kcal), macronutrients, key vitamins, and minerals

You can add Custom Nutrition Fields if you need to list other data which is not included by default.

Technical Questions

Will this slow down my site?

No, the plugin is optimized for performance.

  • Nutrition data is stored efficiently in WordPress post meta
  • No external API calls or heavy calculations on page load
  • Displays only use lightweight HTML and CSS
  • No impact on products without nutrition enabled

Can I bulk import nutrition data?

Currently, data must be entered manually per product.

While there’s no built-in bulk import feature, developers can use WordPress functions to programmatically add nutrition data. See our Developer Documentation for details.

Compliance Questions

No – compliance is your responsibility.

The plugin provides tools to display nutrition information in various formats, but:

  • You must ensure data accuracy
  • You must verify all required nutrients are declared
  • You must confirm the format meets local regulations
  • You should consult official guidelines for your markets

Think of this plugin as a powerful tool, not a compliance guarantee.

Where can I find official nutrition labeling guidelines?
